Celebrities are known for their larger-than-life personas and lavish lifestyles. When it’s time for them to shine on the red carpet, sometimes these factors make for shocking fashion choices. Whether you love or hate their red carpet fashion choices, chances are that the more rebellious they are, the more you talk about them.

The best red carpet fashion rebels make the best red carpet fashion moments. It’s easy to forget an actress’s perfectly coiffed designer dress. Yet, everyone remembers when Cher bared her abs and wore a headdress, or when Lady Gaga made a political statement with her dress. Fashion rebels are just more interesting. Here is a list of the actresses and musicians who we’ll never stop talking about.

1. Gwendoline Christie, Emmys 2019

The statuesque blonde (she stands at a staggering 6’3”) walked the red carpet at the 2019 Emmys in a Gucci gown that many said channeled a Renaissance painting of Jesus. The heavily embroidered red and cream gown highlighted her alabaster skin and came complete with a red cape. Twitter users were quick to compare her to a goddess, Jesus, or a character from her show, Game of Thrones, fighting for the iron throne.

Whatever the inspiration for her look, Christie proved that she knows how to make a fashion statement.

2. Helen Mirren, Cannes 2019

Most women stop experimenting with cotton candy colored hair dye once they hit a certain age. Yet, Dame Helen Mirren debuted the prettiest pink hair on the red carpet at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. The 73-year-old actress proved that you’re never too old to have fun with your look.

The proud mom-to-be Slick Woods showed off her baby bump in a black suit. Known for breaking a fashion rule or two, the model opted to go shirtless and leave her suit jacket unbuttoned to show off her growing belly, tattoos, and the chains that adorned her neck.

Topping off her daring look, Woods dyed her hair and eyebrows a blazing shade of red and wore feathered mix-matched stilettos.

4. Kristen Stewart, Cannes 2018

Walking the red carpet in pointy-toe Christian Louboutins isn’t every girl’s dream. Kristen Stewart is one actress who is known for her love of sneakers and has swapped them for heels numerous times on the red carpet. Yet, while walking the red carpet at the BlakkKlansman premiere at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, the actress decided to take off her heels on the middle of the red carpet for all photographers and fans to see.

5. Rita Ora, MTV Europe 2017

According to singer Rita Ora, a bathrobe and diamonds go together. Showing off her glowing skin and perfectly primed makeup, the British songstress walked the red carpet for the MTV Europe Awards in London in a white bathrobe and matching fuzzy towel. As far as buzz-worthy outfits, her “undone” look won the award for “most daring outfit” that night.

It feels like just yesterday that the world was left speechless by Lady Gaga’s meat dress. The pop star wore the attention-grabbing outfit as a political statement, urging the US military to protect the rights of gay men who serve our country.

“You saw the prime rib of America speech so you knew it was about equality,” Gaga later said about the dress.

7. Bjork, Academy Awards 2001

Leave it to Bjork to make a lasting impression the one time that she was nominated for an Oscar.

The Icelandic singer is known for her quirky musical style and videos. Yet, when her song for the film Dancer in the Dark earned her an Oscar nomination, Bjork stepped out onto the red carpet in a one-of-a-kind tulle gown that looked like a swan was wrapped around her neck.

8. Jennifer Lopez, Grammy’s 2000

Don’t be fooled by the gown, she’s still Jenny from the block. When Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet in a sheer Versace number, next to rapper (and then-boyfriend) Sean Puffy Combs, she almost broke the internet. The dress went down in history for its plunging slit and sheer fabric that left little to the imagination.

9. Celine Dion, Oscar Awards 1999

In 2018, Celine Dion made headlines with her glamorous couture fashion week outfits. Yet, the Canadian songstress has always made a statement with her fashion choices.

In 1999, she walked the red carpet in a white satin pantsuit and matching top hat. Complete with sunglasses, it was a bold look proving that the multi-Grammy winning singer could dress however she pleased.

10. Sharon Stone, Academy Awards 1998

Actress Sharon Stone probably had no idea that pairing a white Gap T-shirt with a Vera Wang skirt would make her go down in fashion history. But, the high-low look was considered controversial for the red carpet in 1998. The actress looked lovely and sparked countless copycats for a look that, decades later, is considered standard.

11. Elizabeth Hurley, Movie Premiere 1994

All eyes were on Elizabeth Hurley when she walked the red carpet for the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Her boyfriend, Hugh Grant, was the bigger star at the time, but when she posed in a black Versace gown with a thigh-high slit held together by giant safety pins, the British actress became an instant celebrity and sex symbol.

12. Cher, 58th Annual Academy Awards 1986

Cher’s Bob Mackie dress that she wore as a presenter at the Academy Awards in 1986 is still one of the most risqué looks the red carpet has ever seen. The sequined two-piece showcased the singer’s glorious six-pack and came complete with a matching headdress and satin cape. Few have been able to top her glamorous look.
